Class of 2019 Joins the Regiment of Midshipmen and U.S. Navy Reserve on Acceptance Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 11, 2015 – On Saturday, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point welcomed 243 “plebe candidates” of the Class of 2019 into the Regiment of Midshipmen as they took USMMA’s Corps of Cadets Oath administrated by Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D., Superintendent of USMMA, during the Acceptance Day Ceremony and Parade. They were then sworn in as midshipmen in the U.S.

With 50 female candidates, the incoming class has the highest percentage of young women to enter the Academy in its history.

The keynote speaker, Maritime Administrator, Paul N. Jaenichen, Sr., gave the commencement address before a crowd of more than 2,200 including graduates, family members and representatives from the federal government, U.S. military and maritime industry.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., June 10, 2015 – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administrator, Paul N. Jaenichen, Sr., will deliver the 79th Commencement address at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point on Saturday, June 20, 2015, Rear Admiral James A. Helis announced today. This year, USMMA will award degrees to 227 midshipmen.
