Plebes Complete First Overnight Training Cruise

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 27, 2015 – The United States Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) newest plebes, completed their first overnight training cruises aboard the training vessel, T/V Kings Pointer this month. The first of ten scheduled overnight trips for the Class of 2019 sailed August 13-14. These trips follow the nine shorter plebe day trips conducted during indoctrination. The intent is for each class member to participate in an overnight cruise by the end of the trimester.

USMMA Command Inspection

Fingers sweeping for dust.  Eyes peering into drawers and closets.  Plebes trembling at attention.  These were common themes at last Saturday’s U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Command Inspection, in which members of the Regimental staff and guests examined more than 600 barracks rooms with an eye to ensuring the health and welfare of Academy midshipmen.

USMMA Community Remembers CAPT Baumgart

Friends, colleagues and midshipmen of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point held a memorial service yesterday, remembering and honoring CAPT Elwood Charles Baumgart, USMS, Professor in the Department of Engineering, who died on July 31. He was remembered not only as a consummate professional and knowledgeable dedicated professor, but also more personally as a sports fan, and as a generous friend and shipmate with a big heart.

USMMA Hosts Record Breaking Blood Drive

KINGS POINT, N.Y., - August 18, 2015. The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point held its first blood drive of 2014 yesterday, breaking the Academy’s previous donation record by 100 units.

Midshipmen Acknowledged for Excellence in the Classroom and at Sea

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 14, 2015 – On Wednesday, during a lunchtime ceremony Academic Dean, Dr. Shashi N. Kumar, Deputy Superintendent, Rear Adm. Sue Dunlap, USMS, and Director of the Academic Center for Excellence, Lt. Cmdr Paul D. Acquaro, USMS, were joined by United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and staff to congratulate 231 midshipmen for their outstanding efforts in the classroom and at sea.

Memorial Service for Captain Elwood Baumgart

There will be a memorial service for Captain Elwood Baumgart on Monday, August 17 at 1100 in the Mariner’s Memorial Chapel. For midshipmen and USMS personnel, the uniform will be khakis; all others in appropriate civilian attire. All Kings Point community members are invited to attend.

Class of 2019 Joins the Regiment of Midshipmen and U.S. Navy Reserve on Acceptance Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 11, 2015 – On Saturday, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point welcomed 243 “plebe candidates” of the Class of 2019 into the Regiment of Midshipmen as they took USMMA’s Corps of Cadets Oath administrated by Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D., Superintendent of USMMA, during the Acceptance Day Ceremony and Parade. They were then sworn in as midshipmen in the U.S.
