Financial Aid

Overview

Welcome to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Financial Aid Website.  It is the goal of the Office of Financial Aid to ensure that all students who are accepted to the Academy are able to attend, regardless of financial need.

Midshipmen attending USMMA receive tuition, room and board, uniforms, and textbooks at no cost.  Midshipmen are responsible for the payment of Midshipman Fees and other costs associated with enrollment at USMMA. These include:

  • Midshipman Fees for personal services (laundry services and tailor/seamstress)
  • Plebe and Educational Kits
  • Transportation Workers Idenfication Credential (TWIC) and Passport
  • Miscellaneous expenses
  • General supplies
  • Transportation costs for liberty and leave periods
  • Academy-approved health insurance

USMMA participates in the Title IV Federal Student Aid (FSA) Programs for Pell Grants and Direct Loans (Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and Parent PLUS Loans). Financial aid is available for all qualified Midshipmen, regardless of income, and may be used to offset the costs outlined above. USMMA does not offer institutional aid, but all outside scholarships are welcomed.  Students residing in states that offer tuition programs for qualified residents should contact the appropriate state office for more information.

Students interested in receiving Federal Financial Aid should file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Instructions on how to file are available in the Apply for Aid section of this website.

Please take time to review our FAQs. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Office of Financial Aid.
