Commander David Pulis, P.E.
CDR Pulis has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Marine Engineering Systems and Marine Engineering respectfully. CDR Pulis also is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of New York, and has an active 2nd Assistant Engineers license for unlimited horsepower. He also served over 20 years in the Strategic Sealift Reserve Program and retired at the rank of Commander.
CDR Pulis shifted from a career in the industry to begin the profession of teaching in 2005. Since 2010, he has been a faculty member of in the Marine Engineering Department at USMMA. He has taught a variety of courses in the engineering department, been an assistant Department Head for Marine Engineering, and is currently an Assistant Dean for Support Programs. These programs include, informational technology, classroom technology, budgeting, facilities, textbook procurement, and other emergent issues as they arise.
Upon graduation from USMMA, CDR Pulis participated in design work with the US Navy on multiple amphibious hulls, as well as sailed on commercial, military, and training vessels as a member of the Engine Department. CDR Pulis brings together his scholastic knowledge as well as design practices and operational/hands-on techniques to assist USMMA students with their path towards excellence in engineering. Additionally, he has served on multiple committees throughout the campus and wrote sections of the MSCHE self-study report as well as chaired and authored the most recent ABET reaccreditation report.
Besides his academic work, CDR Pulis coached the USMMA Water Polo Club for ten years. He and a few determined players took the club out of its hibernation of five years and revived it. The Water Polo Club grew to a substantial number of players under CDR Pulis’s leadership. It continues today as a club sport at the Academy. CDR Pulis is not native to New York, but currently resides on Long Island with his wife Laura, and two daughters Shannon and Kelly; who all consider him an honorary New Yorker.
