USMMA Named One of 388 Best Colleges by Princeton Review

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 18, 2022 – The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, N.Y. has once again been selected as one of Princeton Review’s, “Best 388 Colleges" for 2023. Only about 14% of America’s approximately 2,700 four-year colleges are profiled on the list, which can be viewed at PrincetonReview.com.

Princeton Review, an educational services company not affiliated with Princeton University, says in a statement that they selected the best 388 colleges, “primarily based on our high opinion of their academics. We monitor colleges continuously and annually collect data on more than 2,000 schools. Each year we also visit scores of schools, and meet with, or talk to hundreds of college administrators. We pay close attention to feedback we get about colleges from students, parents, educators, and our own staff at The Princeton Review locations across the country. We also value the opinions of our college counselors and advisors, particularly our 23-member National College Counselor Advisory Board.”

USMMA is also listed in Princeton Review’s “Best Northeastern” section, their list of the best 224 colleges in the northeast region of the United States.

“Our team is very pleased to see that the Merchant Marine Academy has been selected among the Princeton Review’s list of ‘Best Colleges’ again this year,” said Rear Admiral John Ballard, Ph.D., Academic Dean and Provost. “Our challenging academic program, including its sea year experiential learning component, has helped develop many of America’s finest mariners and commissioned officers. USMMA’s dedicated faculty and staff, and our superb students, are proud that Kings Point continues to serve the nation so well.”

Upon graduation from USMMA, midshipmen receive a Bachelor of Science Degree, an Officer’s Commission in the U.S. military, and a United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine Officer License which ensures a steady stream of U.S. merchant marine officers to support the nation’s economic and security interests. In exchange for their education, Kings Point graduates serve five years on active-duty in the U.S. military or work in the maritime industry for five years, with an eight year commission in any branch of the reserves.
