Midshipmen Compete at Governor’s Cup
KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 22, 2019 – The 5th Annual Governor’s Cup Charity Regatta took place on Aug. 17. The field of 33 boats included three from USMMA:
BLACK DIAMOND, USA 26, Midshipman Cooper Seipert
M.A.T. 1180, Midshipman Neeko Helbich
USA 35, Midshipman Veronica Grabiak.
All three raced in the 11-boat PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) Spinnaker II division.
In a race-day social media post, Ken Luczynski, Head Offshore Sailing Coach, described the event. “The Offshore Team fielded three boats for the Governor’s Cup Regatta. The 11.4 nautical mile course, gave many of the Plebes onboard a taste of distance racing.”
“The course provided an opportunity to sail close-hauled off the start line at Execution Rocks, reach across the sound from Mamaroneck to Sands Point, downwind spinnaker sailing to Stepping Stone Light House, and finally back upwind around Hart Island to the finish at Execution Rocks again,” said Luczynski. “The lighter winds and long legs allowed for many of the Plebes to get some experience in different positions around the boats.”
