300 Plebe Candidates Begin Their Journey at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 5, 2024 – Today, 300 young men and women arrived at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, marking the start of their journey as plebe candidates in the Class of 2028. Representing 45 states, territories, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, these candidates underwent their first day of indoctrination, known as INDOC.
INDOC immerses plebe candidates in the essentials of maritime and regimental life at USMMA. The training focuses on military discipline, daily regimental routines, hygiene, physical fitness, basic seamanship, and an introduction to academics.
On their first day, “Day Zero,” the candidates were issued uniforms, received their first regulation haircut, and formed companies on Barney Square for the first time. During the formation, USMMA Superintendent Vice Admiral Joanna M. Nunan greeted the candidates and their families. After congratulating them on their accomplishments, she administered the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy Midshipman Oath.
"Today marks the beginning of a transformative journey," said Vice Admiral Nunan. "These young men and women are stepping into a legacy of service and excellence. The skills and values they will acquire here at Kings Point will shape them into the leaders of tomorrow, both at sea and ashore."
The indoctrination period will last 17 days, during which the Class of 2028 will take their first steps toward becoming mentally, physically, and academically prepared for their future roles as U.S. Merchant Marine and Military Officers. To follow along, indoctrination photos will be posted USMMA’s Official Facebook page.
