On Wednesday, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) celebrated Midshipman Appreciation Day.

KINGS POINT, New York, May 14, 2013 – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) today announced that Gen. William M. Fraser III, Commander, U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), has been chosen as this year's commencement speaker to be held at USMMA on Monday, June 17, 2013.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 25, 2013 –On Thursday, Midshipman Haven Hoffman received the U.S. Department of Energy’s Excellence in Energy Award for his independent study entitled “Solar-Hydrogen Home and Feasibility of Photovoltaic Technology in Marine Applications,” which promotes alternative power and energy efficiency.  The award was presented by Daniel Howett from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the Class of 2013 Marine Engineering Systems Capstone Presentations, before an audience of midshipmen, professors, and industry professionals.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April, 24, 2013 -  The United States Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center (NMC) has reapproved the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) cadet deck and engine programs effective July 1, 2013 to July 31, 2018.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 17, 2013 – On Wednesday, Rear Admiral James A. Helis, PhD., Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) hosted the annual Conference of Service Academy Superintendents (COSAS) at USMMA. The event, which rotates among the five Federal Service Academies, marked the organization’s 54^th year and was attended by senior leadership from each Academy who discussed matters of mutual interest and best practices. 

In celebration of Earth Day 2013, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and the Great Neck Library (GNL) will work together once again to offer a Saturday filled with fun science and colorful chemistry.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 10, 2013 - The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) held its annual Shipping-Out Fair for the Class of 2013. The event, which was coordinated by the Department of Professional Development and Career Services, welcomed major maritime unions, vessel owners and operators, and military representatives who met with and interviewed the graduating class. Most of the 25 companies who attended were regular attendees, who return annually acknowledging the extremely positive experiences that they have had with their USMMA Alumni employees.

STAMFORD, C.T., March 19, 2013 – Midshipman Ian Holtzworth took first prize in the Student Research Papers Competition for his paper “The OBO: A Bridge between Supply and Demand Fundamentalists and Those Ushering in the ‘Eco Age' ” at the Connecticut Maritime Association’s annual Trade Show and Conference, Shipping 2013.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) announced that Captain George E. Edenfield, Head of the Department of Marine Transportation, has received a federal appointment from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to serve in the Merchant Marine Personnel Advisory Committee (MERPAC).
