Midshipmen Observe National Remembrance Day

Midshipmen laying wreaths at the grave sites of fallen heroes

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Throughout the nation, the graves of fallen soldiers and veterans have been decorated in honor of their service as part of the "Wreaths Across America" program during National Remembrance Day. Fifteen midshipmen, led by the newly-appointed Regimental Commander, Daniel Galginaitis laid wreaths at the grave sites of fallen heroes who lost their lives in securing freedom for our country at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.

"Our midshipmen were honored to participate at this very special remembrance ceremony at Long Island's only national veteran's cemetery," said Rear Admiral Helis, Ph.D., superintendent at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. "Midshipmen and graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy have actively served in every battle since World War II. We take time to honor them and all who have sacrificed for our freedom."

All six represented branches of the military were represented - the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy were honored during the ceremony. Since 1992, "Wreaths Across America" has honored deceased veterans by sponsored wreath-laying ceremonies at cemeteries and memorials in all 50 states.
