United States Merchant Marine Academy Construction Updates

KINGS POINT, N.Y., June 7, 2013 – As part of the United States Merchant Marine Academy's (USMMA) Capital Improvement Plan, there are several major construction projects underway.  New piles at Mallory Pier have been installed allowing contractors to enter the next phase of construction, which includes dismantling the wooden pier and replacing it by laying pre-cast pier decking on the piles.

USMMA and American Merchant Marine Museum Celebrate National Maritime Day

Today the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and its American Merchant Marine Museum observed National Maritime Day. The afternoon began with a brief ceremony at Barney Square, during which Deputy Superintendent, Rear Admiral Susan L. Dunlap, addressed the Regiment of Midshipmen, faculty, staff and guests and read the Presidential Proclamation honoring the U.S. Merchant Marine for its service to our nation. 

Midshipman Hoffman Receives the Department of Energy's "Excellence in Energy Award"

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 25, 2013 –On Thursday, Midshipman Haven Hoffman received the U.S. Department of Energy’s Excellence in Energy Award for his independent study entitled Solar-Hydrogen Home and Feasibility of Photovoltaic Technology in Marine Applications, which promotes alternative power and energy efficiency.  The award was presented by Daniel Howett from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the Class of 2013 Marine Engineering Systems Capstone Presentations, before an audience of midshipmen, professors, and industry professionals.

USMMA Hosts Conference of Service Academy Superintendents

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 17, 2013 – On Wednesday, Rear Admiral James A. Helis, PhD., Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) hosted the annual Conference of Service Academy Superintendents (COSAS) at USMMA. The event, which rotates among the five Federal Service Academies, marked the organization’s 54th year and was attended by senior leadership from each Academy who discussed matters of mutual interest and best practices.

In celebration of Earth Day 2013, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and the Great Neck Library (GNL) will work together once again to offer a Saturday filled with fun science and colorful chemistry.
