USMMA Hosts Conference of Service Academy Superintendents

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 17, 2013 – On Wednesday, Rear Admiral James A. Helis, PhD., Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) hosted the annual Conference of Service Academy Superintendents (COSAS) at USMMA. The event, which rotates among the five Federal Service Academies, marked the organization’s 54th year and was attended by senior leadership from each Academy who discussed matters of mutual interest and best practices.

The day’s events included welcoming remarks by the Superintendent, a campus tour and breakout sessions that allowed in-depth discussion of matters related to Commandants, Academic Deans and Superintendents. These topics included Curriculum, Accreditation, Recruitment, Diversity, Training, Fitness and Budget Planning.

“Our 54th COSAS has been a great success,” said Helis. “All of the Academies benefit when our leaders come together to share lessons learned and ideas for the future. This event allows us to renew our commitment to educating the next generation of men and women who will serve as leaders of honor and exemplary character for our nation.”
