T/S Golden Bear Makes Historic Voyage

KINGS POINT, N.Y., July, 20, 2016 - Yesterday, the T/S Golden Bear, California Maritime’s Training Ship, passed both SUNY Maritime College and The United States Merchant Marine Academy, with cadets from Texas A&M, CAL Maritime and thirty from USMMA.

World Trade Center Memorial Installed at USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 14, 2016 – New York City provides a fitting backdrop for the new 9/11 memorial, which was recently installed at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). The structure, which was designed and built by Ensign Benjamin Hladick, USNR, Class of 2016, incorporates a piece of steel girder from the World Trade Center.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 1, 2016 – Last month marked the end of an era for the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA).  Faculty, staff, alumni, and midshipmen bid farewell to Capt. Douglas A. Hard ’62, USMS, who retired after 42 years of dedicated service to USMMA, and 54 years of service to our Nation.

Midshipmen and Faculty Honored at Class of 2016 Awards Convocation

KINGS POINT, N.Y., June 30, 2016 - On Friday, June 17, 2016, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point held the “Class of 2016 Awards Convocation” in Ackerman Auditorium. Sixty-eight midshipmen received over 100 awards in recognition of their academic achievements, athletic accomplishments and exemplary service to the Regiment of Midshipmen, the community and the Nation.

USMMA Welcomes Incoming Class of 2020

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point (USMMA)  welcomed its incoming Class of 2020, consisting of 279 plebe candidates, representing 51 states and U.S. territories, and two foreign countries, Panama and Malaysia.

Information on Sea Year Stand Down

Sea Year training on board commercial ships will resume in March. Three companies have met the Maritime Administration’s criteria to train USMMA Midshipmen on their vessels. The companies are Crowley, Maersk and APL. The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is also reviewing the packages of five other companies which have applied to meet the Sea Year requirements.

Kings Pointers Rescue Fishing Crew Adrift in Indian Ocean

A U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) midshipman assigned to the MV Maersk Kentucky as a Deck Cadet during his Sea Year helped the crew, including two alumni, rescue 11 Pakistani fishermen, who were adrift for ten days at sea, May 29. Midshipmen 2nd Class Joseph Mugno joined Kings Pointers, Chief Mate, Brandt Hager ’00 and Second Mate, Dylan Carrara ’09, sailing the over 290 meter and 60,000 deadweight ton container vessel.
