Midshipmen Receive Third Term Awards

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 22, 2019 – On Monday, Rear Admiral Jack Buono, Superintendent, Dr. John Ballard, Academic Dean and Provost, and Captain Mike Stroud, Commandant of Midshipmen, along with Commander Paul Acquaro, Director of the Academic Center of Excellence presented Gold and Silver Stars to midshipmen demonstrating academic excellence during the third term of Academic Year 2018-2019.

Midshipmen Compete at Governor’s Cup

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 22, 2019 – The 5th Annual Governor’s Cup Charity Regatta took place on Aug. 17. The field of 33 boats included three from USMMA:

BLACK DIAMOND, USA 26, Midshipman Cooper Seipert

M.A.T. 1180, Midshipman Neeko Helbich

USA 35, Midshipman Veronica Grabiak.

All three raced in the 11-boat PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) Spinnaker II division.

Schnatz Named Head of Physical Education & Athletics at USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 19, 2019) – Superintendent, RADM Jack Buono, and Academic Dean and Provost, Dr. John Ballard, announced Kristofer Schnatz as the new Head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) today. Schnatz will begin his tenure at Kings Point on Monday, Aug. 19.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 12, 2019 – In a late May lunch muster ceremony, Rear Admiral Buono, Superintendent, Dr. John Ballard, Academic Dean and Provost, and Captain Mike Stroud, Commandant of Midshipmen, and Commander Paul Acquaro, Director of the Academic Center of Excellence presented Gold and Silver Stars to midshipmen demonstrating academic excellence during the second term of Academic Year 2019.

Plebe Candidates Complete Indoctrination; Superintendent Comments

KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 26, 2019 – Plebe candidates at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point achieved an important milestone this past weekend; the completion of their summer training. The Class of 2023 began the orientation period known as Indoctrination, or Indoc, on July 5, and finished with a late-night Honor Oath ceremony on Saturday, July 20, that marked a change in their status from Plebe Candidate to Plebe in the Regiment of Midshipmen.

USMMA Off-Shore Sailing to Compete in Around Long Island Regatta

KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 25, 2019 – Starting today, July 25, USMMA will compete in the Around Long Island Regatta, which is a 205 nautical mile event combining Ocean, Harbor and Sound racing. The race is open to all sailboats in excess of 24 feet and is designed for sailors at all levels.

Academy Leadership opens new Obstacle Course at USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 7, 2019 - Rear Admiral Jack Buono, Superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), along with CAPT Mikel Stroud, Commandant, and Dr. John Ballard, Academic Dean and Provost, officially opened the new confidence-obstacle course at Kings Point recently. Faculty, staff and midshipmen all attended the ribbon-cutting that marked the opening of the course.
