KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 25, 2019 – Starting today, July 25, USMMA will compete in the Around Long Island Regatta, which is a 205 nautical mile event combining Ocean, Harbor and Sound racing. The race is open to all sailboats in excess of 24 feet and is designed for sailors at all levels. Considered Long Island's premier sailing race, the Around Long Island Regatta takes place annually toward the end of July, beginning on a Thursday afternoon in New York Harbor, and ending in Hempstead Harbor. Trophies are awarded for the first three finishers in each division, with many additional awards for various categories. USMMA will compete with two sailboats:

The first, MATADOR, is an 11.80 meter racing sloop. She will be crewed with ten midshipmen and Coach Ken Luczynski.

The second, BLACK DIAMOND, is an 11.1 meter racing sloop. She will be crewed with eight midshipmen and Coach Rick Dominique. This crew is made up of the members of the Dinghy Sailing Team, who want to experience the offshore and overnight distance race. They will be competing in the Novice category.

Even though the forecast is for light winds, both boats expect to finish on Saturday. We expect to get regular updates from Coach Dominique as the race progresses, and live trackers are available at Around Long Island Regatta.
