USMMA to Host Parents Weekend

KINGS POINT, N.Y. Aug. 19, 2019 - The U. S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point will host Parents Weekend, Sept. 6-8, 2019.

Highlights of Parents Weekend will include the Ceremony of Beating Retreat, by the USMMA Regimental Band, on Sept. 6, and a formal parade on Sept. 7. The parade marks the acceptance of the Plebe class into the U.S. Navy Reserve and is followed by an informal pinning ceremony for families and friends on Barney Square. The annual event will also offer opportunities to visit Midshipmen living quarters, academic classes, and sporting events, along with a number of staff presentations, while the Class of 2023 will enjoy their first night of liberty since entering the Academy. (Note: Restriction and watches remain in effect during Parents Weekend. Please check with your Midshipman/Plebe to ensure they meet eligibility requirements for liberty).

ABOUT USMMA

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, N.Y, educates and graduates leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Academy, which was established under the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, as the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1943. It is administered by the Maritime Administration under the auspices of the Department of Transportation.
