USMMA Operations Status:

On 12 February 2025, the United States Merchant Marine Academy will be OPEN.  Recognizing the possibility of winter weather, UNSCHEDULED TELEWORK (AS WELL AS UNSCHEDULED LEAVE) IS AUTHORIZED FOR EMPLOYEES.  Employees planning to telework or take unscheduled leave must coordinate with and obtain approval from their supervisory chain of command. Anyone scheduled to visit the Academy or American Merchant Marine Museum should check with their host for specific guidance. All are encouraged to monitor the weather forecast and stay safe.

Power Squadron

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Power Squadron is a waterfront club open to midshipmen interested in improving their ship handling, navigation, fishing and engineering skills. The program has an expansive fleet consisting of vessels from a 25’ center console, to a 60’ Tug. Each vessel is manned, maintained, and commanded by a crew of Midshipmen. The program is underway through the week, as well as weekends, for training, fishing competitions, and cruises. The Power Squadron regularly supports operations of the Academy in transport of athletic teams, coaches, and administration.

Asma has been a cornerstone at the Waterfront beginning 1997 where he was announced as the Director of Power Squadron. Asma has led the program to over 375 underway trips, up and down the east coast of the United States. These include Nantucket, Cape Cod, Montauk, West Point, Ocean City, New London, and many more. Asma has also led the USMMA Kings Point Fishing Team to numerous prize finishes in regional and national events. 

Originally from Port Washington, NY,  Asma served our Nation in the United States Coast Guard from 1992-1996, continuing in the USCG Reserves until 2000.

Asma bring an immense amount of underway and instruction experience to the Academy. Paired with his 20+ years at the Academy, Asma has worked with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), US Navy, NYPD, and FDNY. Asma has also work with collegiate programs as a Maritime Instructor at the United States Coast Guard Academy and SUNY Maritime from 2001-2018.

Asma maintains a 100-Ton United States Coast Guard Master License, allowing him to operate any vessel in the Waterfront's fleet.

Asma lives in Huntington, NY, with his wife, and two sons.
