U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2025 Arrives for Indoctrination
KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 12, 2021 – Last Friday, as the Tropical Storm Elsa arrived on the U.S. East Coast, the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Class of 2025 arrived at Kings Point. The 284 plebe candidates represent 46 states and territories including Saipan and Guam; of which, 17 % are female and 24% are minority candidates.
During their first day of Indoctrination, also known as, “INDOC,” plebe candidates were issued uniforms, received their first regulation haircut, and formed on Barney Square, as companies, for the first time. During formation, USMMA Superintendent, Vice Admiral Jack Buono greeted the candidates and their families. After congratulating them on their accomplishments, he administered the Merchant Mariner Oath.
The entire indoctrination period will last 17 days. During that time the Class of 2025 will take their first steps toward becoming mentally, physically and academically prepared for their future as U.S. Merchant Marine and Military Officers.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, N.Y, educates and graduates leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces.
