Kings Point Rugby Clinches Tri-State Conference Championship in Hard-Fought Win

KINGS POINT, N.Y., November 11, 2024 – Yesterday, undefeated Kings Point Rugby faced off against the 5-1 Hofstra University Rugby team in the Tri-State Conference Championship at the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) Tomb Field. Despite entering the game with some uncertainty—due to injuries and key players away on sea duty—the USMMA team rose to the occasion and delivered a memorable performance to secure the win.

The match started strong for Kings Point, who quickly surged to a 40-point lead in the first half. The attack was led by Captain and Fly-Half William Kopatich. The attack was dynamic and included bruising and shifty runs by both backs and forwards. However, fatigue began to show in the second half. After playing just days earlier, Kings Point’s limited depth became more apparent. Hofstra took advantage, launching a comeback as Kings Point struggled with penalties that stalled their momentum. Despite the pressure, Kings Point’s defense held strong, and they managed to hang on for a 40-33 victory.

“This win means a lot to us,” said Jake Yates, President of Kings Point Rugby. “We’ve faced a lot of challenges this season, but the team showed incredible resilience to get this win. We’ve earned this championship, look forward to a bigger win next weekend.”

With the victory, Kings Point Rugby secured the Tri-State Conference Championship and now looks forward to a tough matchup against the #1 ranked, reigning national champions, Babson College. The game is set for this Saturday at 6 PM on Tomb Field.
