Midshipmen Mentoring Program

Midshipmen Mentoring Program

The USMMA Midshipman Mentoring Program will assist students in setting and achieving academic goals and promoting intellectual discovery and academic success.  It will encourage students to become self-directed learners and decision makers, and facilitate a campus environment that fosters effective learning.

Good relationships established during the Mentoring process benefit all.  Students come to know the USMMA better and learn to explore all possible options, becoming accomplished learners. Mentors take satisfaction in the intellectual and personal growth of their Midshipmen. The Academy fosters students who will become productive, loyal graduates and good citizens.

The Mentor's Role:

The academic mentors at USMMA play a crucial role in the success of our midshipmen.  Listed below are some of the typical activities that involve academic mentors on campus:

  1. Help the midshipman understand the academic and administrative processes of the academy and the nature of its academic programs. The Mentor also seeks to understand each Midshipman's particular concerns affecting academic progress. The Mentor neither grants nor denies administrative approval for particular academic actions.
  2. Help the Midshipman understand expected standards of achievement and the likelihood of success in certain areas of study.
  3. The Mentor helps the Midshipman understand the sequencing of courses, majors, internships, sea year, and other academic experiences provided at the Academy. The Mentor also encourages the development of a well rounded student and promotes healthy growth within the regiment and other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
  4. Refer Midshipmen to other resources when appropriate.
  5. Participate in Mentor training sessions provided by the academy to keep informed and current.
