Biography
Dr. Jennifer L. Speelman is a Professor of History at The United States Merchant Marine Academy. She received her B.A. from the Pennsylvania State University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Temple University in Philadelphia. She comes to the Humanities Department after teaching for nine years at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. Jennifer is an active member of the Society for Military History, the country's fourth largest historical association. She served as the Coordinator for the 2005 Annual Meeting in Charleston, South Carolina and is now President. Jennifer has written several essays including ''Military Education and Training" in A Companion to American Military History (Blackwell Publishing, 2009) and "Revitalizing a Neglected Past: U.S. Naval History" in OAH Magazine of History (October 2008) as well as a chapter entitled "The United States Navy and the Genesis of Maritime Education" in Beyond Combat: Essays in Honor of Russell F. Weigley (American Philosophical Society, 2008). She currently oversees the Kings Point Gettysburg Staff Ride Program and is researching how the U.S. Army War College Class of 1961 viewed the strategic importance of the Panama Canal.
