USMMA Volunteers Help Make "Night to Shine" a Success for Over 300 Honorees

USMMA Volunteers and Church Organizers

KINGS POINT, N.Y., February 14, 2025 - More than 80 midshipmen, plus faculty and staff, from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) joined volunteers at The Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Port Washington on February 7th to take part in Night to Shine, a global prom night for individuals with special needs. Sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, the event provided an evening of celebration for over 300 honorees.

From the moment guests arrived, USMMA volunteers ensured that each honoree felt like royalty, "escorting them down a red carpet, taking photos, dancing, and cheering them on as each was crowned a Prom King or Queen,” said, First Class Midshipman Maeve Jackson. The energy in the room was contagious, with midshipmen and attendees alike sharing smiles and laughter throughout the night.

Second Class Midshipman Randolph Naugaus said, “this event bridges gaps, fosters understanding, and brings people together in a way that is both uplifting and inspiring,” He said, it’s not just about one night of fun, it’s about creating moments that leave a lasting impression on everyone involved.”

Father John Lardas, Pastor of St. Michael’s expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are grateful to God for the participation of the volunteers from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in being Buddies to our Honorees for our second annual Night to Shine. The great success of 90 volunteers speaks volumes about the leadership of Academy officers, such as Vice Admiral Joanna Nunan, Command Chaplain Jonathan Jones, Commander Carolyn Hunter and many others who were there for this special evening.” He added, “We are thankful for the service rendered by all those from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in helping Night to Shine be a great success. We could not have done it without you.”

For USMMA midshipmen, the night was an opportunity to give back, connect with the community, and experience firsthand the power of service. Many walked away inspired, already looking forward to continuing the tradition next year.

Reflections from other from Midshipman Volunteers

“When I first received my buddy from his parent, his mom was overwhelmed with emotion. I assured her we would have a great time, and we definitely did! We walked the red carpet, took pictures, danced, sang, rode in a limo, and wore crowns. It was unforgettable.” Midshipman Maeve Jackson, 1/C

“As midshipmen, we often get caught up in the Academy’s structured and regimented lifestyle, so it’s incredibly fulfilling to engage with the community in such a meaningful way.” Midshipman Ryleigh Benson, 1/C

“I had the privilege of helping in organizing the event, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of interest from midshipmen across all classes wanting to attend. We even had to arrange for additional buses because so many people wanted to be part of Night to Shine.” Midshipman Ryleigh Benson, 1/C

“There isn’t a value I can put on being part of this global event. I’ve worked with individuals with special needs for about nine years, and each experience is as rewarding as the next. Events like this center me as a person and remind me of the values of positivity and gratitude.” Midshipman Nicolas Espada, 1/C
