USMMA Midshipmen Visit Washington, D.C.

KINGS POINT, New York, March 28, 2025—Last month, a select group of midshipmen from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, traveled to Washington, D.C. to take part in the inaugural “KP in DC” program— a two-day event that gave them access to leaders across the maritime industry, Congress, the Pentagon, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the military, to learn how they work together to support national and economic security.
Accompanied by Captain Elizabeth Clifton, USN, Director of Naval Science, and Lieutenant Ing Hao Vesna, USN, Company Officer, USMMA Class of 2019, the midshipmen began their visit on Capitol Hill where they observed the nomination hearing for Steven Bradbury, who was recently confirmed as Deputy Secretary of Transportation. They met with Senator Roger Wicker and Senator Mark Kelly, USMMA Class of ‘86. They also participated in a Capitol tour and gained insights into the legislative process and the role of Congress in shaping maritime policy.
At the Heritage Foundation, the midshipmen had the opportunity to engage in discussions with national security experts, with a specific focus on challenges presented by China in the maritime arena. A “speed networking” session hosted by the American Maritime Congress allowed the midshipmen to meet industry stakeholders representing labor unions, shipping companies, and maritime advocacy organizations. Later in the day, a visit to Regent Craft highlighted advancements in maritime innovation and regulatory frameworks, showcasing emerging technologies that will shape the industry’s future.
The following day, midshipmen met with leaders at the global management consulting firm McKinsey, including Jon Spaner, ’93, to discuss leadership and geopolitical trends. A visit to MARAD headquarters provided perspectives into its role in maintaining a strong U.S. Merchant Marine and ensuring the Nation’s sealift capability. Finally, during an extended visit to the Pentagon, the team had a chance to gain insights from the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, U.S. Transportation Command, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Indo-Pacific Affairs. Colonel Jeremy Mushtare,’96, played a key role in facilitating the highly informative sessions.
Deputy Superintendent RADM Dave Wulf, USMS, who joined the midshipmen during several sessions said, “This trip broadened the perspectives of our midshipmen, who will be playing crucial roles in furthering the Nation’s security—while also providing policymakers and thought leaders in Washington with a window into the importance of Kings Point and the top-notch leaders USMMA continues to produce.”
