USMMA Celebrates Thanksgiving

KINGS POINT, N.Y., November 21, 2023 — On November 20, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) celebrated Thanksgiving with a Regimental Thanksgiving Dinner in Delano Hall. The annual celebration is a much-loved tradition at USMMA and a special treat for midshipmen.

The event began with the entrance of the Official Party and the playing of the National Anthem by the USMMA Regimental Band. LCDR Mark E. Beaudet, CHC, USN, Command Chaplain, opened the event with a Thanksgiving Prayer. Then, the Master of Ceremonies, First Class Midshipman Kenobi Kinch, introduced Vice Admiral Joanna M. Nunan, Superintendent.

Admiral Nunan welcomed the crowd, which included those who had just returned from sea. She pointed out the many changes at USMMA, highlighting the biggest change—the midshipmen themselves. The Admiral prompted them to shout out their many experiences and accomplishments which added to the excitement in the dining hall.

Afterward, the Acting Commandant of Midshipmen, CDR Drew McCarthy, hosted the Regimental Change of Command Ceremony. Commanding Officers of five companies, two battalions, and the Regiment of Midshipmen were relieved of their duties by classmates who will serve in their positions for the second half of Academic Year 2023-2024. First Class Midshipman Katie McGillicuddy, outgoing Regimental Commander, was relieved by First Class Midshipman Jackson Troutt.

The highlight of the evening was enjoying each other’s company during a family-style meal of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, vegetables, and apple cider. In all, they shared:

  • 90 Turkeys, about 1100 pounds
  • 6 gallons of Gravy
  • 40 pounds of Cranberry Sauce
  • 75 Apple Pies
  • 120 pounds of Green Beans
  • 160 pounds of Stuffing
  • 200 pounds of Sweet Potato
  • 72 gallons of Fresh Apple Cider

The regiment took time to thank Mitchell Glazer for another wonderful Thanksgiving, his 28th at USMMA, and his last one before his upcoming retirement as Director of Food Services.
