U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to Host Commencement for the Class of 2019

 

KINGS POINT, N.Y., June 6, 2019 – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Class of 2019 will graduate on Saturday, June 15, at 10:00 a.m., at Tomb Memorial Field on the USMMA grounds. The 200 graduating seniors of the class will welcome Dr. Peter Navarro to the Academy as the graduation speaker. Dr. Navarro is an assistant to the President, and the Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy.

 

In addition, Captain Donald J. Marcus, will deliver this year’s distinguished alumnus remarks. Captain Marcus is the president of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots (MM&P), and a 1979 graduate of USMMA.

 

Graduates from this year’s class represent nearly every state in the country. USMMA is expecting approximately 2,000 guests at the event, including family members and guests of the graduating class, distinguished visitors representing the federal government, flag and general officers from the U.S. Military, senior executives from the maritime industry, community leaders, alumni, faculty and staff.

ABOUT USMMA

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, N.Y, educates and graduates leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Academy, which was established under the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, as the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1943. It is administered by the Maritime Administration under the auspices of the Department of Transportation.
