Sponsored Prep
USMMA Sponsored Preparatory School Program:
The United States Merchant Marine Academy recognizes that some students may require additional academic preparation before tackling our rigorous academic curriculum. The USMMA Sponsored Preparatory School Program provides the foundation for future success at the Academy and a pathway for appointment.
The one-year program consists of two full-time semesters at either New Mexico Military Institute or Marion Military Institute. The sponsorship provides $10,000 toward the cost of attendance at one of these two schools. The academic curriculum, which includes chemistry, physics and calculus, is designed to prepare students for the Academy’s challenging first year curriculum.
Sponsored Prep students must reapply to the Academy the following year; however, candidates that meet all program requirements are offered an appointment under the authority of the Secretary of Transportation.
You cannot apply directly to the prep school program. All candidates applying to USMMA are automatically considered for a prep school sponsorship. Contact your regional Admissions Officer to determine if a Preparatory School sponsorship is a good fit for your Academy admissions goals.
Students offered a prep school sponsorship must meet the following requirements for appointment to USMMA the following year:
1. Meet the medical requirements for appointment to USMMA
2. Pass the Navy Physical Readiness Test (PRT)
3. Complete the required curriculum with a minimum 2.5 GPA
4. Receive positive endorsements from the prep school
