All Present at the United States Merchant Marine Academy

KINGS POINT, N.Y., October 21, 2013 – Today, classes resumed at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) following an unscheduled fall break due to the federal government shut down. Superintendent, Rear Admiral James A. Helis, PhD., welcomed back the entire Regiment of Midshipmen and assured them that the revised Academic calendar would allow the First Class to obtain their United States Coast Guard licenses and graduate as previously scheduled.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy Celebrates 70 Years

KINGS POINT, N.Y., September 30, 2013 – Today, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) marks its 70th anniversary. The Academy, which began as a World War II Cadet Corps training facility, was dedicated as the United States Merchant Marine Academy on this date in 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. “The Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy,” said Roosevelt.

Before the start of the session, he had a tour of the Academy’s capital improvements and met with his nominee midshipmen in front of Melville Hall where the summit took place.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Celebrates Reopening of Rogers Hall

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 10, 2013 - The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at Rogers Hall to celebrate the reopening of the newly renovated midshipman barracks. This was the fifth of six barracks to be completed as part of USMMA’s overall $61 million dollar Capital Improvement Plan.
