Superintendent, Rear Admiral James A. Helis, PhD., welcomed back the entire Regiment of Midshipmen and assured them that the revised Academic calendar would allow the First Class to obtain their United States Coast Guard licenses and graduate as previously scheduled.

The Academy, which began as a World War II Cadet Corps training facility, was dedicated as the United States Merchant Marine Academy on this date in 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. “The Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy,” said Roosevelt.

Kings Point, N.Y. - On Friday, August 23, Representative Steve Israel (D-NY) hosted a summit at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) to discuss the issue of homelessness among veterans and solutions to combat it. Before the start of the session, he had a tour of the Academy’s capital improvements and met with his nominee midshipmen in front of Melville Hall where the summit took place.
