Cost of Attendance

A Midshipman's Cost of Attendance (COA) will vary by class year and the number of terms on campus during a given academic year. The COA includes three types of expenses: Midshipman Fees, Other Out of Pocket Expenses, and Cost Allowances for Financial Aid Eligibility.

Midshipman Fees: Midshipmen Fees cover personal services (Laundry Service and Tailor/Seamstress) and are payable to USMMA at start of each academic year or the first term on campus in an academic year. These fees must be paid before a Midshipman can be enrolled in classes. Midshipmen are NOT charged for personal services during terms at sea.

Other Out of Pocket Expenses: These expenses include items that Midshipmen are required to purchase for enrollment at USMMA and are payable directly to third parties. These costs are incurred prior to and during the first term of enrollment and include a Passport, TWIC, and Plebe and Educational Kits. Financial aid, scholarships, and college savings plan payments can be used to reimburse oneself for these expenses, but incoming Plebe Candidates must cover these costs prior to disbursement of any pending financial aid.

Cost Allowances for Financial Aid Eligibility: These expenses will vary by Midshipman and represent qualified educational expenses for financial aid purposes. These costs could include transportation costs for liberty and leave periods, miscellaneous expenses, other supplies, and health insurance. Financial aid, scholarships, and college savings plan payments can be used to reimburse oneself for these expenses.

Note: Only Midshipman Fees can be covered by pending financial aid because they are the only costs payable directly to USMMA. Credit balances from excess financial aid, scholarships, and college savings plan payments will be refunded to the Midshipman's bank account on file approximately 2-3 weeks after payments are posted to the student account (14 calendar days after receipt of Title IV financial aid funds).
