Mariners Chorus Sings at National Maritime Awards Dinner
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – May 23, 2016 – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) Mariners Chorus joined the Glee Clubs of the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Coast Guard to perform at the National Maritime Awards Dinner at the National Press Club, Washington D.C.
Director of Chapel Music and Mariners Chorus Dr. Katherine Meloan said, “it was a privilege to perform for some of the most distinguished leaders in the maritime industry. This event gave exposure to Kings Point and to the music programs at the Academy.”
Over three hundred guests, many representing organizations that promote maritime and naval heritage, attended the gala event hosted by the National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS) and Naval Historical Foundation (NHF). Formerly known as the Washington Awards Dinner, the National Maritime Awards Dinner celebrates those who have made significant contributions to broaden our nation’s maritime and naval heritage visibility.
“I definitely learned a lot from the experience and it was really great to meet the award recipients,” said Midshipman 3rd Class Shaun Meehan who noted how much he enjoyed the event.
Midshipman 3rd Class Chandler Chiappe said, “the National Maritime Awards Dinner was a great opportunity to represent the Merchant Marine Academy at an event for mariners of all kinds, from the military, to the private sector. I was honored to be in the company of the men and women in attendance, and particularly to share with them my pride for my school and passion for my music.”
