KINGS POINT, N.Y., Oct. 4, 2018 - Earlier today, the Deputy Superintendent, Rear Admiral Susan Dunlap sent the following message to all users at USMMA informing them of a developing issue involving the presence of mold in the barracks:

Today we want to inform you that we are aware of the reports of mold in the barracks. We are committed to the safety and security of the Regiment and we are in the process of evaluating the extent of the issue and initiating corrective action to eradicate the problem. We have been through the barracks and have identified areas that potentially harbor mold or mildew. We are in the process of bringing in expert assistance to test areas that may be contaminated (both surface and air) and to remediate any negative findings. We are also evaluating the building support systems which will result in recommendations for repair, cleaning or other remediation.

It is important to note that this summer was extremely hot and humid – well above average according to reports. Add to that a period where we experienced an extended power outage that shut down most, if not all, air conditioning in the barracks and you have conditions that may have created excessive moisture there. In some cases, Midshipmen uniforms have been affected by the appearance of mold or mildew. In those cases, we have replaced the damaged clothing at no cost to the Midshipman.

The medical professionals at Patten Health Clinic are engaged and available to any Midshipman with concerns. We are prepared to relocate Midshipmen in areas that indicate the presence of mold or mildew. Additionally, we have identified a leak that was previously undetected, that we are now in the process of repairing to help bring the moisture levels down.
