USMMA Welcomes Alumnus John T. Shea as Inaugural Director of Facilities and Infrastructure

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 7, 2025 – The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is proud to welcome alumnus John T. Shea, as the first-ever permanent Director of Facilities and Infrastructure. Today marks Mr. Shea’s official first day in this newly established leadership role, where he will oversee the long-term planning, maintenance, and modernization of the Academy’s physical plant and infrastructure.

Mr. Shea brings with him an extraordinary depth of experience in facilities management, having most recently served as CEO of the New York City Department of Education’s Division of School Facilities (DSF) since 2008. In that role, he managed the largest K-12 school district in the nation, serving over one million students and overseeing a portfolio of 1,500 buildings totaling 135 million square feet. His leadership spanned multiple critical areas including engineering, sustainability, emergency preparedness, and maintenance.

Prior to his work at the NYC DOE, Mr. Shea served for twelve years as Executive Director of Facilities for Nassau BOCES, the largest regional school district in New York State.

Shea graduated from USMMA in 1989, with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and an Officer Commission in the Navy Reserve. His early career included roles in the maritime industry where he supported ship repair, construction, and military sealift operations during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and with the Aramark Corporation in their Educational Services division.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Shea back to USMMA,” said Vice Admiral Joanna M. Nunan, Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. “At a time when the Academy is gaining much attention and support, John’s leadership, expertise, and personal connection to Kings Point make him the perfect choice to guide our facilities into the future.”

Please join us in welcoming John T. Shea back to United States Merchant Marine Academy.
