USMMA Observes Day of the Seafarer

KINGS POINT, N.Y., June 25, 2018 - Merchant Mariners are a vital part of the U.S. maritime transportation system, supporting the nation’s commercial and economic needs. The Maritime Administration (MARAD) affirms momentum building within the industry to address seafarers’ wellbeing, while supporting the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) efforts to promote strategies, tools, and best practices that address stress and safety issues impacting seafarers. U.S. Merchant Mariners are actively involved in delivering essential supplies and equipment to our troops and continue to play an important role in our Nation's efforts to advance democracy, peace, and freedom around the world. We are grateful for their dedication and personal sacrifices.

Today, USMMA joins MARAD and other Federal entities, maritime academies and training institutions, shipping organizations, ship owners, and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer “meaningfully," with an eye toward mariners’ mental and physical wellbeing on land and at sea.

The Day of the Seafarer was established through a resolution adopted during a Diplomatic Conference of the International Maritime Organization held in Manila in 2010. Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civilized society.

This year the Day of the Seafarere theme is "Seafarers’ Wellbeing.”

To mark this day, June 25, 2018, let us honor the services of #merchantmariners by displaying the flag of the United States at their homes, on their ships, businesses and in their communities.
