USMMA Midshipman Selected for NSF Green Chemistry Travel Scholarship

KINGS POINT, N.Y., June 11, 2013 - Midshipman Dylan Flanagan, a Marine Engineering major of Class 2015, has received a 2013 National Science Foundation (NSF) Travel Scholarship to attend the 17th Annual Green Chemistry and Green Engineering Conference, June 18-20, 2013, in Washington. He will also attend an all-day student workshop on Monday, June 17th. The conference and the workshop are sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Green Chemistry Institute.

Midshipman Flanagan was selected from a large and highly competitive pool of applicants with outstanding qualifications in this year’s NSF Scholars Program. Selection was based on student application, college transcript, two one-page essays, and a faculty’s recommendation letter.  A student membership of the ACS is also required.

“Midshipman Flanagan wrote excellent essays”, said Dr. Ping Furlan, a math and science professor who encouraged Midshipman Flanagan to apply. “Clearly, the four months sea  experience and two years of USMMA academics have allowed Midshipman Flanagan to gain an understanding of the shipping industry and the importance of preserving and protecting our environment through greener ship designs, greener energy, and greener practices,”  Furlan continued.  “Midshipman Flanagan will hopefully carry his interest in green chemistry and green engineering beyond this conference and into the future as a maritime or military officer.”

Midshipman Flanagan, is from West Chester, Penn. and was nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy by  Congressman Joe Sestak.
