USMMA Dedicates Torah Mantles and Holocaust Torah During Homecoming

As Jewish people around the world observe Rosh Hashanah, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) proudly shares the recent dedication of two new Torah mantles at the Mariners' Memorial Chapel. The dedication made possible by the generosity of Kings Point Alums Joseph Schwartzstein, '96 and Alex Rosenberg, '69, took place during the Academy’s Homecoming on September 6, 2024, as part of a Friday evening Shabbat service that also celebrated 50 years of women at USMMA.

One Torah mantle is dedicated to the memory of the 142 Cadet-Midshipmen who lost their lives during World War II, including eight Jewish cadets. The mantle reflects the Academy’s proud tradition as the only federal service academy entitled to carry a battle standard flag, symbolizing the sacrifices of those who served. The second mantle honors RADM Paul Krinsky, USMMA’s seventh Superintendent, and features symbols representing both Deck Officers and Engineers, recognizing the service of the Academy’s midshipmen and alumni.

In a historic moment, USMMA also welcomed a rescued Holocaust Torah, from the Memorial Scrolls Trust. This Torah, written in 1870 in the town of Precice, Bohemia, was rescued after the Holocaust and will now reside at the Mariners' Memorial Chapel as a symbol of remembrance and resilience. The Torah underscores the Academy’s dedication to Holocaust education, which is an integral part of leadership training at USMMA.

USMMA plans to host a Hachnasat Sefer Torah, a celebration that will formally welcome the scroll to its new home.
