USMMA Celebrates Parents Weekend - Regimental Band Performs Ceremony of Beating Retreat
KINGS POINT, N.Y., September 4, 2018 – Midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point enjoyed the holiday weekend with their families and friends who joined them for Parents Weekend. Close to 2,000 guests joined their Midshipmen for a weekend of activities that included tours, classroom and barracks visits, athletic events and a formal parade.
The highlight of the weekend was the “Ceremony of Beating Retreat” performed by the USMMA Regimental Band. The ceremony, a musical performance with origins in 17th century Europe, showcased the midshipmen’s musical talent and marching skill. This year’s performance was “a salute to mariners serving around the world.”
The USMMA Regimental Band was joined by Midshipmen members of the USMMA Jazz Band and Glee Club, and special guests, the Nassau County Police Emerald Society Pipe Band which has performed at major events such as the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and NY Jets Football games has been a significant part of USMMA’s Ceremony of Beating Retreat for many years.
Superintendent Rear Adm. James A. Helis, USMS, congratulated the band for their outstanding performance. He made special mention of the fact that many of the band members are plebes and how in eight short weeks of working together they delivered an extraordinary show.
