U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2026 Arrives for Indoctrination
KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 13, 2022 - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, N.Y., welcomed 255 plebe candidates to the Class of 2026 for initial training on July 8.
The nearly 20-day orientation period known as Indoctrination, or Indoc, teaches plebe candidates the basics of maritime and regimental life at USMMA and orients them towards their future careers. Training will emphasize military discipline, daily regimental routine, physical fitness, respectful relationships, basic seamanship, and includes preparation for college-level academics.
The incoming Class of 2026 consists of 255 plebe candidates, representing 42 states. There are 35 women candidates, and 62 minority candidates.
Rear Adm. Sue Dunlap, the Deputy Superintendent, performing the duties of Superintendent, swore in the class and the cadre in front of parents, families and friends at a lunchtime ceremony on Friday, July 8.
“Today we welcomed the Class of 2026 along with their families and friends to the Kings Point experience,” said Dunlap, the first female officer to serve in this capacity during an indoctrination session. “We wish them all the best as they start their leadership development journey here at Kings Point.”
Upon graduation, USMMA midshipmen will receive a Bachelor of Science Degree and a United States Coast Guard-issued Merchant Marine Officer License, as well as a commission as an officer in the Armed Forces.
