KINGS POINT, N.Y., December 5, 2017 – On Friday the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of the newly renovated Zero Deck and Midshipman Fitness Center. Zero Deck is the underground walkway that provides an avenue for traversing the entire below-grade level of all six barracks and Delano Hall in a safe and secure environment, especially in the event of inclement weather. 

Faculty, staff and Midshipmen were welcomed by Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Superintendent, Rear Admiral Sue Dunlap, Deputy Superintendent and CDR Drew McCarthy, Deputy Commandant, who thanked all those who played a role in the project’s completion. He made special mention of Steve Flanagan, Academy Carpenter, and LT John Jaeger, who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Fitness Center.

Admiral Helis was then joined by Commander McCarthy, Regimental Commander, Midshipman Captain Robert Moore, Steve Flanagan, and Midshipman Douglas McDonald, Regimental Fitness Officer, who cut a ceremonial ribbon.

The renovation has provided upgrades and installation of modern heating and cooling systems where applicable.  Additionally, the replacement of sanitary piping throughout and upgrade of electrical service and fire alarm suppression and sprinklers completed the final phase of infrastructure replacement in multiple dormitories.  This upgrade included all corridor lighting, flooring, ceiling, signage and interior finishes. The Zero Deck facility will house Midshipmen personal services along with recreation and activity spaces.  The total construction cost for Zero Deck was $4.5M and was completed in a year.
