U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s 72nd Birthday
Message from the Superintendent
Rear Admiral James A. Helis, USMS, Ph.D.
September 30, 2015
Midshipmen, faculty, staff and alumni:
As the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy was dedicated 72 years ago, the tide was turning in the European fronts of World War II. Our Merchant Mariners braved the dangers of the Atlantic, and the gauntlet of the Straits of Gibraltar, and brought the war to the Mediterranean, ending the Axis’ North African campaign, and in September forcing the Italian government to surrender as the Allies landed on the mainland. It was a time for both optimism and commitment to overcome the severe challenges that still lay ahead.
Engaged in every major theater of war, the U.S. Merchant Marine endured exceptionally heavy casualties by American standards. Our Academy lost 142 of our own in the war’s many fronts. The eldest Kings Pointers can be proud of their critical contribution to victory. We remember and honor them as we maintain the Academy’s commitment to leadership and service, two fundamental elements of the Academy experience.
Academy graduates and the Academy continue to be essential for a vital maritime industry and our strong flexible national defense. As we reflect on our 72 years, we should be optimistic, while being ready to brave whatever challenges lay ahead – ready to lead with action.
Acta non Verba!
Sincerely,
James A. Helis
Rear Admiral, USMS
