The United States Merchant Marine Academy Celebrates Thanksgiving
KINGS POINT, N.Y., November 26, 2013 - On Monday evening, the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) administration, faculty, staff and alumni joined the Regiment of Midshipmen to celebrate Thanksgiving. The Regimental Thanksgiving Dinner held in Delano Hall is one of USMMA’s most cherished annual traditions.
The evening began with an introduction by the Regimental Commander, Midshipman Jerick Sablan, and a benediction by the Reverend Monsignor Brendan Riordan, Catholic Chaplain. Then, Superintendent, Rear Admiral James A. Helis welcomed the group. He mentioned many of the things that the Academy community is thankful for, especially the Regiment of Midshipmen. He then wished everyone, “safe travels and a very Happy Thanksgiving.”
After a quick lesson on turkey-carving by Head Chef, Steve Furman, each table shared a family-style meal of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, vegetables and apple cider. One Plebe at each table was given the honor of carving the turkey. In all, 80 turkeys were served to 770 midshipmen and their guests. The midshipmen enjoyed their meal and each other’s company. They talked with one another about the new trimester, sea-year, and travel plans. Plebe Craig Zubchevisch said “Thanksgiving dinner was great. The chef did a great job!” Plebe Carll Johnson, said “Thanksgiving dinner is my favorite holiday meal - and I thought it was great, too!.”
