Superintendent’s Statement Regarding El Faro
Midshipmen, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends of the Academy,
As the U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for survivors of the U.S. container ship, El Faro, last night, we received confirmation that one of our own, Steven Wink Shultz, Kings Point class of 1984, was a member of its crew. We join our partner Academies and the entire Merchant Marine community in grieving the loss the El Faro’s 33 crew members.
We express our deepest condolences to their family, friends, and co-workers in the maritime industry. In the words of the Maritime Administrator, Paul N. Jaenichen, “U.S. Merchant Mariners answer a call that often takes them away from home for months, and at times places them in harm’s way, serving with great skill, honor and passion for work that provides the lifeblood of our Nation’s economic and national security.”
We are honored and humbled to be part of this vital industry. We are also reminded of the challenges of the sea, and the purpose and importance of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s mission "to educate and graduate licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America's marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war."
We will honor the El Faro’s crew members at a memorial ceremony during tomorrow’s morning colors formation, Friday, Oct. 9.
