USMMA Tops Transportation Programs Says Department of Education

KINGS POINT, N.Y., September 30, 2015 — President Obama announced the launch of the U. S. Department of Education’s new College Scorecard, meant to help students and parents identify which schools provide the biggest bang for your buck earlier this month. Not surprisingly, the United States Merchant Marine Academy scored very high.

Among the 251 schools offering transportation programs, USMMA was number one for “Salary after Attending” and “Percent Earning Above HS Grad.” The Academy is seventh best for “Graduation Rate”, and in the top 10% for “Average Annual Cost.”

Sea Fair 2015 Shows Strong Demand for USMMA Graduates

KINGS POINT, N.Y., September 29, 2015 — Maritime professionals and hiring managers from 32 companies, federal agencies, military and maritime-related organizations participated in the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) annual career fair, Sea Fair 2015, held in O’Hara Hall earlier today.

The event, coordinated by the Department of Professional Development and Career Services, introduced the entire Regiment of Midshipmen to opportunities for internships and full-time military, federal and maritime service.

USMMA Midshipman Studies International Military Rules of Engagement in Italy

KINGS POINT, N.Y., September 25, 2015 – A United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Midshipman of the had the opportunity to participate in a Rules of Engagement (ROE) Workshop at the Institute for International Humanitarian Law, San Remo, Italy, this summer.

Midshipman 2nd Class Stacee Glass, a Marine Transportation Major from Johnstown, PA, was the only undergraduate student in the course aimed at commanders, legal advisors, “and others who are involved in mission planning and the development of rules for using force during military operations.”

Plebes Complete First Overnight Training Cruise

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 27, 2015 – The United States Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) newest plebes, completed their first overnight training cruises aboard the training vessel, T/V Kings Pointer this month. The first of ten scheduled overnight trips for the Class of 2019 sailed August 13-14. These trips follow the nine shorter plebe day trips conducted during indoctrination. The intent is for each class member to participate in an overnight cruise by the end of the trimester.

USMMA Midshipmen Recognized at Connie Awards Event

KINGS POINT, N.Y., December 12, 2013 - On Monday, five United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) midshipmen received scholarships at the prestigious annual Connie Awards luncheon at the Newark Club in Newark, New Jersey. An audience of about 300 distinguished representatives from various sectors of the transportation industry was present to see them recognized.  Academy Superintendent, Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D.  said, “We are very proud of the accomplishments of this outstanding group of midshipmen.

USMMA's Captain George E. Edenfield appointed to serve on Merchant Marine Personnel Advisory Committee

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) announced that Captain George E. Edenfield, Head of the Department of Marine Transportation, has received a federal appointment from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to serve in the Merchant Marine Personnel Advisory Committee (MERPAC).
